Indian Navy will include stealth frigate INS Taragiri

The state-of-the-art stealth frigate INS Taragiri, which is going to give new strength to India’s maritime security and self-reliance, will be formally inducted into the Indian Navy on April 3. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will be present as the chief guest in this grand ceremony to be held in Visakhapatnam.

This warship is being considered an important milestone in India’s indigenous defense manufacturing capability and in the direction of ‘self-reliant India’. INS Taragiri was handed over to the Navy on 28 November 2025 by Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). It is the fourth of the Nilgiri-class frigates of Project 17A and the third ship built by MDL.

This state-of-the-art warship has been designed by the Warship Design Bureau and was built under the ‘Integrated Construction’ model, thereby reducing the construction time and was completed in 81 months. Earlier, the lead ship Nilgiri had taken 93 months to build. More than 75% indigenous content has been used in this project and there was participation of more than 200 MSMEs, which also provided employment to thousands of people.

Weighing approximately 6,670 tonnes, INS Taragiri is equipped with the state-of-the-art CODOG (Combined Diesel or Gas) propulsion system, which enables it to operate at high speed and long range. It includes state-of-the-art weapons like BrahMos supersonic missiles, MF-STAR radar, MRSAM air defense system, 76mm gun, close-in weapon system, rockets and torpedoes.

All these systems are linked through a modern combat management system and integrated platform management system, which enables fast and accurate response during combat.

It is noteworthy that the name INS Taragiri is taken from the old Leander-class frigate of the Indian Navy, which served the country from 1980 to 2013. The new Taragiri is joining the Navy carrying on the same tradition but with more advanced technology.

This warship is capable of playing an important role not only in combat operations but also in missions like humanitarian aid and disaster relief. Along with this, the Navy is expected to receive three more Project 17A warships by August 2026.
