World TB Day: Eradicating this disease is not just a dream, now treatment is possible with awareness
TB is a serious and contagious disease, which can take a serious form if not treated on time. TB mainly affects the lungs and is spread from person to person mainly through the air. When a person coughs, sneezes or talks, the microbacteria present in his body spread into the air. People nearby, especially those with weak immunity, inhale them and this can spread the infection.
Every year on 24 March, TB Day is celebrated all over the world to make people aware about the importance of danger, precautions and treatment of TB. This disease can be completely controlled by timely treatment and adopting proper precautions. To avoid infection, it is very important to wear a mask, maintain distance from the infected person and contact the doctor on time. The treatment of TB can be long but by taking all the medicines and treatment on time, the patient can become completely healthy.
The theme of World TB Day 2026 is “Yes, we can end TB.” If the government, health organizations, doctors and society together spread awareness, invest and cooperate, then infectious diseases like TB can be completely eliminated. This theme conveys a message of hope and action. It is not impossible to eliminate TB if country leaders, policy makers, and ordinary people work together, adopt new WHO recommendations and technologies, and strengthen collaboration.
This day is also important because on March 24, 1882, Robert Koch discovered Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This discovery opened a new path in the diagnosis and treatment of TB. For this reason, in 1982, WHO and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease announced to celebrate March 24 as World TB Day. This day is not only about spreading awareness about the disease but also about encouraging collective efforts and cooperation against TB.
Apart from this, proper diet and lifestyle are also helpful in the treatment of TB. Diet rich in proteins, vitamins and iron increases immunity and enables the body to fight infections. TB patients should stay away from smoking and alcohol.
