6 more LPG tankers ready to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran is not taking ‘toll’ from India
Amidst the ongoing tension in West Asia, a relief news has emerged for India. Six more Indian-flagged LPG tankers are ready to transit through the Strait of Hormuz and no ‘toll’ is being charged by Iran from these vessels. Rajesh Kumar Sinha, special secretary in the ministry, said on Tuesday (24 March) that all six tankers are ready for the route and the route is open under international maritime rules. He clarified that Iran is not charging any duty from Indian-flagged ships.
Meanwhile, two LPG tankers ‘Jag Vasant’ and ‘Pine Gas’ successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday (March 23). Both these ships are heading towards India carrying about 92,000 tonnes of LPG. These ships were provided protection by Indian Navy warships while passing through sensitive areas.
These tankers have been chartered by public sector companies BPCL and HPCL and are expected to reach Indian ports between March 26 and 28. Earlier, ships named ‘Shivalik’ and ‘Nanda Devi’ had also safely crossed the strait, carrying around 92,700 tonnes of LPG.
It is noteworthy that due to the increasing conflict between Iran, Israel and America, global energy transportation through the Strait of Hormuz has been seriously affected. India imports about 60 percent of its LPG requirements, of which about 90 percent is supplied through this route. In the current situation, about 3 lakh tonnes of LPG and other cargo is said to be stuck.
Apart from this, more than 540 Indian sailors aboard around 20 ships are also stranded in the region. The government is constantly monitoring their safety and the process of repatriating some sailors is also going on with the cooperation of Gulf countries.
According to the government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Due to diplomatic talks held at the level of Jaishankar, the safe passage of some Indian ships has been ensured. Indian Navy warships are deployed in the area, which are providing security to the ships.
