TMC leader’s threatening letter case from Cooch Behar to judicial authorities
A case of allegedly sending ‘threatening’ letters to judicial officers has come to light in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, deepening the controversy amid the election atmosphere in the state. Trinamool Congress (TMC) District President Abhijit De Bhowmik is accused of sending letters to two judicial officers engaged in the adjudication process, the language of which was described by the officials as objectionable and pressurizing.
The surprising thing is that TMC leader Bhowmik had written these letters on the party’s letterhead, in which he alleged that the concerned authorities were removing the names of a large number of voters from the list. Considering the language of these letters as threatening, the judicial officers handed them over to the District Judge and demanded an investigation into the matter.
The judiciary has described the case as unprecedented. It is being told that this issue was also raised in a meeting held in Calcutta High Court on Friday evening, in which senior government officials were present. After this, these letters were handed over to the State Director General of Police Siddha Nath Gupta and instructions were given to take necessary action. However, after the controversy escalated, Abhijeet De Bhowmik has apologized in his clarification. “I sincerely apologize for any mistakes in the language of the letter,” he said.
Let us tell you that Bhowmik is also the Trinamool Congress candidate from Cooch Behar South Assembly seat. This development has raised concerns in the political and administrative circles of the state.
Senior government officials believe that such incidents could affect the law and order situation, especially at a time when the election environment in the state is already tense. An official said that if such pressure is put on judicial officers, it may affect the process of disposal of cases related to voter list.
According to sources, cases of about 60.06 lakh voters are to be settled in the state, out of which more than 1.5 lakh cases are being settled daily. In such a situation, any kind of interference or pressure can slow down the pace of this process. Officials also fear that such developments could lead to increased voter dissatisfaction, especially among those whose names may be removed from the voter list.
