BMC Gets Its First Woman Commissioner She Will Take Over After Bhushan Gagranis Retirement

There has been a historic change in the administrative system of Mumbai. Senior IAS officer Ashwini Bhide has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). She is the first woman officer to reach this post. He has replaced Bhushan Gagrani, who retired on March 31.

Bhide, a 1995 batch IAS officer, was currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office. This appointment is being considered an important step towards increasing women representation in the administration of Mumbai.

Ashwini Bhide is known for her strict administrative approach and timely completion of big projects. She has previously been the Managing Director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, where she spearheaded the Mumbai Metro expansion projects. However, during his Metro tenure, there was controversy regarding the Aarey car shed project. Environmental groups had expressed strong opposition to the cutting of trees in this project.

Possibility of getting full tenure till 2030

IAS Ashwini Bhide has been appointed for a full term, which can last till 2030. His appointment comes at a time when Mumbai needs strong and effective administrative leadership. Before his appointment, names of other senior officers like Sanjay Mukherjee, Aseem Gupta and Milind Mhaiskar were also considered.

The role of Administrative Commissioner is very important in Mumbai metropolis. The city is currently grappling with problems like increasing pressure on infrastructure, environmental challenges and financial balance. In such a situation, Ashwini Bhide’s experience and decision-making ability will play an important role in deciding the direction of the city in the coming years.
