Cash banned at toll plazas, only digital payments from April 1!

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has changed the rules related to toll and now from April 1, only digital payment will be accepted at toll plazas, that is, now highway users will not be able to pay toll in cash.

This step of NHAI will be applicable on all its toll plazas across the country. According to NHAI, from April 1, passengers will be able to pay only at toll plazas through digital means like Fastag and UPI. The move aims to increase efficiency and bring transparency in toll collection on national highways and expressways.

Officials believe that the fully digital system will help vehicles pass through toll plazas faster, thereby reducing long queues and saving travel time. With the removal of cash lanes, officials hope that traffic will flow smoothly especially during peak hours.

Faster processing at toll booths is also likely to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, thereby contributing to a cleaner environment.

However, this change may cause inconvenience to some passengers, especially those who are not ready for digital payments. Vehicles not having valid Fastag or sufficient balance may be fined or may even be stopped at the toll plaza.

In such cases, passengers will have the option to make instant payment through UPI by scanning the QR code available at toll booths. But officials have warned that these transactions can sometimes be affected due to network issues, causing delays.

To avoid hassles, passengers are advised to ensure that their FASTag is active, properly linked to their bank account and has sufficient balance before commencing their journey.

It is also advised to keep a running UPI app on your smartphone as a backup.

This transformation is an important step towards India’s digital infrastructure, which will make highway travel faster, smoother and more efficient.
