Aro Jyotsna Khatun Suspended For Campaigning For Tmc

Taking a major step regarding electoral fairness in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has suspended Jyotsna Khatoon, Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) of Khandaghosh Assembly Constituency. Disciplinary action has also been initiated against him.

Jyotsna Khatoon, who was also posted as Joint Block Development Officer (Jt BDO) in Khandaghosh development block, is accused of openly campaigning in favor of Trinamool Congress (TMC) and criticizing the Election Commission’s procedures on social media. The letter sent by the ECI to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal said that this action has been taken in violation of the Model Code of Conduct and conduct against the principle of complete impartiality expected of election officials.

This matter came to light when Soumitra Khan made serious allegations on social media platform X on March 29. He said that by openly campaigning and posting in favor of TMC, Jyotsna Khatoon has completely abandoned the neutrality required by her constitutional post. Tagging the Election Commission and the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal in this regard, he demanded immediate intervention.

Jyotsna Khatoon’s alleged social media activities were revealed in screenshots shared by Soumitra Khan, in which she was seen posting in support of TMC and criticizing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the voter list. This process is done to update and purify voter lists before elections.

Jyotsna Khatoon, in her Facebook post, launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission, writing, “As per its habit, the Election Commission has actually made a mockery of this process, and has played with people’s lives.” Apart from this, he also said that the elections in West Bengal are like a war between the Center and the state.

He had also raised questions regarding the deployment of central forces and had written that 2.5 lakh central forces are coming, against whom no FIR can be registered.

This entire incident has intensified the debate regarding the fairness of the electoral process in the state. This action of the Election Commission is being seen as a strict message that any kind of political favoritism from the officers posted on election duty will not be tolerated.
