Preparation to improve India-Bangladesh relations; Dhaka will buy 200 broad gauge coaches, 46 locomotives and 50 engines from India.
There are signs of improvement in relations between India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh government has decided to import 200 broad gauge railway coaches from India this year. The country’s Railway Minister Sheikh Abdul Alam gave this information in the Parliament. According to the minister, the European Investment Bank will provide financial assistance for the purchase of these coaches. The delivery of the coaches is likely to begin from June this year and be completed by the end of 2027.
Big plan to expand rail network
The new government of Bangladesh is also working towards expanding the country’s railway network. The new coaches will be used on new rail lines to be determined after delivery is completed. This information was given in Parliament in response to the questions of Jamaat MPs Ilyas Mollah and Ruhul Amin.
According to reports, the Tariq Rehman-led government aims to strengthen the railway infrastructure. Under this, a plan has been made to purchase 260 broad gauge passenger coaches, 46 broad gauge locomotives and 50 meter gauge engines in the near future.
Focus on inter-city connectivity
Bangladesh plans to improve inter-city connectivity by running more trains between Dhaka and northern districts. This will not only provide better facilities to the passengers but will also boost economic activities. Bangladesh currently has a total railway network of 3,428 km, which includes 1,591 km of meter gauge, 1,066 km of broad gauge and 770 km of dual gauge track.
With the election of the new government, there is improvement in relations between India and Bangladesh. During the previous interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, Bangladesh had insisted on spoiling relations with India, Mohammad Yunus’ government had given free hand to Islamic extremists to spread terror in Bangladesh, after which tension was seen between India and Bangladesh.
However, there has been a positive change in relations after the formation of the new democratic government. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman is currently on his first official visit to India, which is being seen as a new beginning in diplomatic relations between the two countries. Experts believe that the purchase of railway coaches from India will not only strengthen the transport infrastructure of Bangladesh but will also give a new direction to the economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
