Indore Municipal Corporations Vande Mataram Row Congress Councilors Refuse To Sing The National Anthem
A big controversy broke out over the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ during the budget meeting in Indore Municipal Corporation, Madhya Pradesh. Two Congress councilors Fauzia Shaikh Aleem and Rubina Iqbal refused to sing the national anthem, following which there was a huge uproar in the House and the proceedings were disrupted. When ‘Vande Mataram’ was being sung during the budget discussion meeting held on Wednesday (April 8), both the councilors refused to participate in it. Fauzia Sheikh Aleem raised questions on this instruction and said what is the legal provision to make singing ‘Vande Mataram’ mandatory in the Municipal Corporation.
After his objection, BJP councilors protested and started shouting slogans, due to which the atmosphere became tense. To handle the situation, Municipal Corporation Chairman Munnalal Yadav directed Fauzia Aleem to leave the House.
Refused citing religious reasons
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Rubina Iqbal said that her decision was based on religious beliefs. He said that according to him singing ‘Vande Mataram’ is not permissible in Islam because it involves an element of worship. However, she also clarified that she sings ‘Saare Jahan Se Achcha’.
During this period, Iqbal criticized not only BJP but also his own party Congress. She also said that if action is taken against her, she may contest the elections as an independent or consider joining Asaduddin Owaisi’s party.
BJP expressed strong objection:
BJP leaders have strongly criticized this incident and raised the demand for legal action. Discussions are going on between Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava and Municipal Corporation President Munnalal Yadav regarding registering an FIR in this matter. BJP city president Sumit Mishra mentioned the importance of ‘Vande Mataram’ during the freedom movement and described it as linked to national pride.
Opposition within Congress also:
Voices of disagreement have also emerged from within the Congress on this controversy. Party spokesperson KK Mishra has criticized this step of the councilors and demanded disciplinary action against them. He also indicated that the dispute may be politically motivated.
After this incident, once again the political and social debate regarding ‘Vande Mataram’ has intensified. While one side is linking it to patriotism and the legacy of the freedom struggle, the other side is citing the right to personal and religious freedom. At present, all eyes are on the possible action and political reactions in this entire matter.
