Justice Yashwant Verma resigns before impeachment; Secure retirement benefits
Finally Justice Yashwant Verma has resigned from his post. He submitted his resignation letter to President Draupadi Murmu. This decision comes almost a year after a huge amount of cash was recovered from his official residence. Justice Verma’s resignation has come at a time when an internal investigation by the judiciary was going on against him and the impeachment process had also started in Parliament.
Actually, the matter came to light on March 14, 2025, when a fire broke out in his government bungalow located in Tughlaq Crescent, New Delhi. During that time, fire personnel and police reached the spot and saw bundles of ₹500 notes, some of which were burning and some were partially burnt. Officials later confirmed that the cash was found in a room which was under the control of Justice Verma.
After the incident, the Supreme Court had constituted an in-house investigation committee. This committee concluded that the cash was indeed recovered and that Justice Verma had direct or indirect control over that room. After this he was transferred from Delhi High Court to his parent court Allahabad High Court. He assumed office there on 5 April 2025, but was not assigned any judicial assignments.
Justice Verma initially refused to resign, following which the Chief Justice of India recommended action against him. In August 2025, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accepted the impeachment motion signed by more than 140 MPs. For this, a three-member inquiry committee was also formed.
Later, the Supreme Court also rejected Justice Verma’s petition, paving the way for action against him in Parliament. Under Indian constitutional provisions, if a judge is removed by Parliament, he loses pension and other retirement benefits. However, due to his voluntary resignation, Justice Verma has now been able to secure all his retirement benefits.
This case exposes a serious face regarding the transparency and accountability of the judiciary. It will now be important to see what the outcome of the internal investigation and other legal processes is and whether any concrete reforms are made to ensure accountability in such cases.
