Veteran singer Asha Bhosle dies at the age of 92, wave of mourning in the music world

Veteran singer Asha Bhosle, one of the great and versatile voices of the Indian music world, died on Sunday (April 12) at the age of 92. The news of his demise has sent a wave of mourning across the country. Asha Bhosle was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on April 11, where she was undergoing treatment in the Emergency Medical Services Unit. He was admitted to the hospital after complaining of extreme fatigue and chest infection. Hospital doctor Pratit Samdani had confirmed his treatment.

His granddaughter Janai Bhosale had shared information about his health on social media platform X during his hospitalization. However, his condition could not improve during treatment and he breathed his last.

Born on 8 September 1933, Asha Bhosle’s music career spanned more than seven decades. He sang more than 12,000 songs in about 20 languages ​​and made a mark in every genre with his versatility. He started his career at an early age and recorded his first song in 1943 for the Marathi film ‘Majha Bal’. After this, in 1948, he sang “Sawan Aaya” for the Hindi film ‘Chunariyan’.

Asha Bhosle was the daughter of great singer Dinanath Mangeshkar and younger sister of vocal nightingale Lata Mangeshkar. Other members of his family were also associated with music, which gave him a rich musical environment since childhood.

In his long career he worked with Shankar-Jaikishan, Sachin Dev Burman, R.D. Burman, O.P. Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri and A.R. Worked with legendary musicians like Rahman. Ghazals, bhajans, romantic songs, cabaret and film songs – he left his own mark in every genre.

He was honored with seven Filmfare Awards as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

Apart from music, Asha Bhosle was also known for her cooking business. Restaurants were operated in his name in Dubai and Kuwait. He also acted in the Marathi film “Maai” in 2013.

With his demise, Indian music has lost such an invaluable voice, which influenced many generations with its tunes and left an indelible mark in the world of music.
