Japanese delegation eyes Kandla Port

A Japanese delegation visited Kandla region of Gujarat to explore possibilities of cooperation in maritime infrastructure and shipbuilding sector. The visit is being seen as a sign of growing maritime cooperation and investment interest between India and Japan. The delegation held a meeting with Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, in which potential partnerships in the shipbuilding and ship repair ecosystem were discussed in detail. Kandla Port is being developed as a major maritime hub under India’s long-term port-led development strategy.

During the meeting, Sushil Kumar Singh gave a detailed presentation of the ongoing and proposed projects at the port. He informed that these projects are in line with the National Shipbuilding Mission and Maritime India Vision, which aims to strengthen shipbuilding capacity in the country and reduce dependence on foreign facilities.

The Japanese delegation showed keen interest in the port’s existing operational capacity, infrastructure preparedness and future expansion plans. According to officials, Kandla’s strategic location on the west coast, good connectivity, available land and growing industrial ecosystem make it suitable for large-scale marine projects.

During the visit the delegation also inspected potential shipyard sites in Kandla and surrounding Veera area. They were given a detailed overview of the port’s operational area, logistics network and proposed development areas to assess the feasibility of the projects.

Officials believe that such international partnerships can play an important role in making India’s maritime sector globally competitive. This initiative is part of efforts to establish the country as a global hub for shipbuilding and ship repair services under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides expressing their desire to continue dialogue on future investment and technical cooperation opportunities. Now, concrete steps are expected to be taken in this direction after further detailed feasibility study and consultation.
