India among the world’s most advanced AI markets: OpenAI
According to the company, India is among the top 5 countries in the world in per capita ‘Thinking Capability’ based on the use of ChatGPT Plus users.
India has become one of the fastest growing ecosystems for AI developers. After the company’s Codex app was launched in February 2026, its users increased four times in just two weeks.
However, AI use in India is currently limited to a few major cities and advanced use is concentrated in even fewer places. It is clear from this that there is a lot of potential to expand AI in the rest of the country.
Oliver Jay, International Managing Director of OpenAI, said that the biggest question now is how quickly the benefits of AI can spread beyond big cities and reach the entire country. For this, it will be necessary to increase access to people, promote skill development and better use of AI.
According to the report, the top 10 cities of the country have about 50 percent AI users, while these cities account for less than 10 percent of the total population.
Maximum use of ChatGPT has been seen in Delhi-NCR. Apart from this, cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai have emerged as major hubs of AI.
The report also said that outside the big cities, the use of AI is increasing rapidly in areas like education and health, due to which it is proving useful in the lives of common people.
However, there is considerable variation between cities in terms of advance usage. The use of data analysis is 30 times more in big cities than in small cities. Whereas the use of coding was found to be 4 times more and the use of codecs developers was found to be 9 times more.
