Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students Shahbaz and Najeeb arrested
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is once again at the center of controversy. Two Muslim university students, Shehbaz and Najeeb, have been arrested and sent to jail for manhandling a Hindu doctor, threatening to kill him and calling the campus a ‘mini Pakistan’.
This incident occurred on April 14, when Dr. Kulwant Singh, resident of Gajraula (Naglia Meo) of Amroha, had come to meet one of his female friends on the AMU campus. After the meeting, when he was returning in an e-rickshaw, a group of Muslim youth stopped him near the campus.
According to the complaint lodged by Dr. Kulwant, initially four youths misbehaved with her. Within no time a crowd of about 30 people gathered there and surrounded them from all sides. The crowd abused him and made communal remarks saying that AMU is a mini Pakistan. Threatening the doctor, the accused said, “You will be cut and buried here and your family will not even know. Only one community dominates here.”
While threatening, the accused youth was also making a video of this entire incident. The doctor, trapped amidst the crowd, found himself unsafe and immediately called the emergency helpline number ‘112’ and sought help from the police.
Before the police arrived, AMU’s proctorial team reached the spot and took the doctor to the proctor’s office for security reasons. After some time, the police team also reached there and after gathering initial details, Dr. Kulwant was safely taken out of the campus. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the police examined the CCTV footage. The footage and coordination with the proctorial team led to the identification of the two main accused, Shahbaz, a resident of Ghazipur and a second year M.Tech student, and Najeeb, a B.Tech student, a resident of Bareilly.
Both the accused were detained from Suleman Hall on Sunday (April 19) evening and sent to jail after interrogation.
Aligarh SP City Aditya Bansal confirmed the arrests and said that the accused have been identified on the basis of CCTV footage. “According to the complainant, the students misbehaved with him and made inciting communal comments. After proper verification, two students have been arrested and further investigation is underway to find other suspects involved in the case,” he said.
The university administration has also taken cognizance of the matter. AMU proctor Professor Mohammad Naved Khan said that after the students come out on bail, a formal explanation will be sought from them and future disciplinary action will be decided based on that. At present, the police is thoroughly investigating the other people behind this incident and the reasons behind the provocation.
