Why are fennel and sugar candy eaten after meals? Know the amazing benefits

In India, eating fennel and sugar candy after meals is a beloved tradition that has been going on for centuries. Most of the people consider it only as a means of cleaning the mouth, but in reality this combination of fennel and sugar candy is an effective home remedy, which is also appreciated by ancient Ayurveda and modern science. Understanding how these two elements work together makes it clear that it is an effective means of maintaining post-meal digestive and respiratory health.

From a scientific point of view, fennel seeds are rich in powerful essential oils like anethole, fenchone and estragole. Anethole is responsible for the distinctive aroma of fennel, acting as an effective antispasmodic. This means it relaxes the intestinal muscles, reducing flatulence, gas and cramps. When it is taken with a small amount of sugar or sugar candy, the body receives an immediate carbohydrate signal, which makes metabolism more effective by increasing the secretion of digestive enzymes. Apart from this, fennel also contains antioxidants like quercetin, which protect the body from oxidative stress.

Ayurveda has been advocating the combination of fennel and sugar candy for thousands of years. Fennel is considered a “Tridosha balanced” herb, that is, it has the ability to balance all three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. While many spices produce heat in the body, fennel is cooling in nature. Ayurveda specifically recommends taking it with Mishri (unrefined rock sugar), as Mishri is also cooling. This combination is especially effective in pacifying Pitta dosha, which often manifests as acidity or heartburn. Apart from digestion, it is also traditionally believed to improve eyesight and calm the mind (sattvik effect).

The combination of fennel and sugar candy is a mild but effective remedy for problems like respiratory health and cough. Fennel works as a natural expectorant, which helps in thinning and loosening the phlegm accumulated in the lungs and expelling it. Its antispasmodic properties are particularly useful in dry and persistent coughs, as it reduces coughing attacks by relaxing the throat muscles. At the same time, sugar candy provides lubrication to the throat and provides relief from pain and irritation by creating a protective layer.

To get maximum benefit from this remedy, it is considered better to use unrefined sugar candy instead of refined white sugar. Also, such fennel should be used which has been kept fresh by dissolving it in chemicals. Chewing a mixture of fennel and sugar candy after meals or during cold and cough is a traditional and effective way to provide relief to the body. Although this combination is beneficial for general health, people with special conditions like diabetes should take it in limited quantities and it is advisable to consult a doctor. Still, for the average person, this simple home mixture is a delicious and easy way to support a healthy lifestyle.
