The entire state was shocked by a tragic accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh on Thursday (April 30) evening. A cruise boat full of tourists suddenly sank. So far, 9 people have been confirmed dead in this accident, while many others are still reported missing.

The accident occurred near Khamaria Island when a total of 29 tourists were on board the cruise operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department. According to officials, due to a sudden strong storm and bad weather, the boat lost its balance and capsized in the surging waters and sank.

According to eyewitnesses, within moments the fun ride turned into a horrific accident. Strong winds and sudden change in weather made the boat unstable, causing panic among the passengers.

It is being told that 15 tourists somehow managed to swim out and saved their lives. At the same time, bodies of 9 people have been recovered so far, including two women. About 10 people are still missing, due to which the death toll is expected to increase.

As soon as information about the incident was received, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team reached the spot and conducted a search operation throughout the night. Relief and rescue operations are facing a lot of difficulties due to darkness, deep water and poor visibility. District Collector Raghavendra Singh and Jabalpur Superintendent of Police Sampat Upadhyay also reached the spot and are monitoring the rescue operations. The injured have been admitted to Jabalpur Medical College, where their treatment is ongoing.

Cruise captain Mahesh Patel, who was wearing a life jacket, survived the accident and was pulled out safely.

State Public Works Minister and local MLA Rakesh Singh said, “SDRF has rescued many people. If any kind of negligence is found in cruise operations, strict action will be taken against the culprits. At present, our priority is rescue work.”

The administration has ordered an investigation into the accident and the search for the missing people is ongoing. This accident once again raises serious questions on water transport safety standards.
