Re Polling Ordered At All 285 Booths In Falta Assembly Constituency

Controversy continues in the Falta assembly constituency of West Bengal over allegations of irregularities and rigging by several ruling parties in the election process. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has taken a big step and decided to conduct repoll at all the polling stations. The Commission said in its official statement that during the voting held on April 29, there were indications of serious electoral crimes and influencing the democratic process, due to which this decision was taken.

According to the instructions of the Election Commission, fresh voting will be conducted in all 285 polling stations including auxiliary booths in Falta Assembly constituency. According to the schedule released by the Commission, this re-polling will be held on May 21 from 7 am to 6 pm, while the counting of votes will be done on May 24.

The Commission said that complaints of irregularities were received from a large number of polling stations, after which it was decided to cancel the earlier voting. Earlier in the day, re-polling was also conducted at 15 polling stations in Diamond Harbor and Magrahat West areas, where polling was declared void based on the reports of returning officers and observers.

This decision of re-polling in Falta has come after allegations made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party had shared videos of large-scale tampering of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the area. The Election Commission had received a total of 77 complaints in which EVM-related irregularities were mentioned. In the EVM machine, the buttons with the names and symbols of Bharatiya Janata Party and Communist Party candidates were covered with adhesive tape or ink was applied on them, due to which voters were not able to cast their vote as per their choice. At the same time, in some cases, it was also found that fragrant items like perfume (attar) were applied on the button of EVM, so that it could be possible to identify which option the voter had chosen.

Taking these allegations seriously, the Election Commission has decided to conduct re-polling in the entire area after a comprehensive investigation. The commission says that it is its primary responsibility to ensure fair and transparent elections, and any kind of irregularity will not be tolerated. After this decision, political activities have intensified in Falta region and all the parties have started making their strategy for the upcoming re-polling.
