America’s cheapest Spirit Airlines ceases operations after 34 years; Fuel prices sink business

In a major blow to the global aviation industry and budget travelers, America’s cheapest Spirit Airlines has announced the closure of all its operations with immediate effect. The company has started the process of winding up its business in an organized manner from May 2. The company took this decision after failing to get a government relief package of $500 million ($500 million) at the last moment.

“It is with great disappointment that we have begun a systematic closure of our operations from May 2. All flights have been canceled and customer service has also been discontinued,” the company said in its official statement. The airline has appealed to the passengers not to come to the airport. This ban came into effect at around 12:30 pm Indian time.

The Florida-based airline was started in 1992 and was known for its low fares and ‘no-frills’ model. It revolutionized budget travel in America by charging separate fees for seats, luggage, and other amenities. However, for the last few years the company was continuously facing financial crisis. Two bankruptcy proceedings since 2024, a failed merger attempt and rising fuel prices due to recent geopolitical tensions have worsened the situation.

The company said it made extensive efforts to improve its financial position and restructure, but the sudden and sustained rise in oil prices due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia seriously affected its future. According to the company, “Hundreds of millions of dollars in additional funding was needed to continue the business, which was not available.”

According to reports, the Donald Trump government had proposed to provide assistance of $500 million to the company, in return for which the government wanted a larger stake. However, these negotiations failed at the last minute and the airline was left with no option to continue operations.

Thousands of passengers have been affected by this sudden closure and future tickets worth lakhs have become worthless. The company has clarified that it will not provide rebooking facility in other airlines. Passengers who have purchased tickets directly will get an automatic refund, while those booking through agents will need to contact their agents.

The future of traveler points linked to the frequent flyer program is also uncertain. On the employment front, the job of around 17,000 people is going to be affected by this decision, including 14,000 direct employees and thousands of contract workers. Union representatives have called it the toughest news of our lives.

Spirit Airlines served more than 70 cities in the United States, as well as some routes in the Caribbean and Latin America. Its closure may reduce competition on many routes, due to which there is a possibility of increase in cheap fares.

Some major US airlines such as JetBlue and Frontier have indicated they will offer limited rescue fares and job opportunities to affected employees. However, in the long run this may impact ticket prices and route availability. This is the first major US airline in nearly 25 years to completely cease operations. The development has left questions over the sustainability of the low-cost airline model amid rising fuel prices and economic pressures.
