DRDO’s indigenous air-independent propulsion system in final stages
Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has claimed major progress regarding the indigenous Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system. DRDO Chief Sameer Kamat has informed that this state-of-the-art system developed for submarines is now almost ready and can soon be inducted into the Indian Navy.
During an event organized at IIT-Mumbai, Kamat said that the land-based prototype of the AIP system has been successfully tested in 2021. Currently, its full version is being prepared in the final stages at the Larsen & Toubro (L&T) plant in Hazira, Gujarat. Once completed, it will be sent to Mazagon Dock in Mumbai, where it will be installed in the 14th submarine of the naval fleet.
DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory has played a major role in the development of this cutting-edge technology. The biggest feature of the AIP system is that it multiplies the underwater capability of diesel-electric submarines. Due to this, submarines do not need to surface again and again, which significantly increases both their stealth and firepower.
Sameer Kamat also informed that DRDO is also working on many other advanced defense projects. These include a system in which the missile is being given the ability to hit torpedoes up to 400 kilometers, which will enable enemy submarines to be targeted from long distances. Apart from this, development of hypersonic glide missiles and laser-directed energy weapons is also ongoing, which can play an important role in future warfare.
Referring to India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, Kamat said the Agni and Prithvi missile systems have played an important role in the country’s security. He said that because of these strategic weapons the risk of major attacks on India has reduced to a great extent.
Kamat also appreciated the Akash surface-to-air missile system and Airborne Early Warning System developed by DRDO. He informed that these indigenous systems played a vital role in ‘Operation Sindoor’ last year, proving their effectiveness in real conditions.
The near completion of the AIP system is being considered an important milestone towards India’s defense self-reliance. After its inclusion, India will be among the few countries which have this advanced technology indigenously available. This will further strengthen the maritime capability of the Indian Navy and its strategic position in the Indian Ocean region.
