New Delhi. 14 international captains including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev have strongly appealed to the Pakistan government to treat Imran Khan better physically, mentally, environmentally and even socially. The joint statement, issued to select media outlets including Cricbuzz, is an official representation for the well-being of the former World Cup-winning captain, who remains in jail with no information available about his health or safety. The 14 signees also include former Australia captain and former India head coach Greg Chappell.
In their one-page request, they say, “We respectfully request the Government of Pakistan to ensure that Imran Khan receive: Prompt, appropriate, and continuing medical attention from a qualified specialist of his choice to address his self-reported health problems. Humane and dignified conditions of detention in accordance with international standards, including regular visits by close family members. Access to the legal process without undue delay or obstruction.” Correct and transparent access.
Apart from Gavaskar, Kapil, and Chappell, the other signees include Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Sir Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh, and John Wright. “Recent reports regarding his health – particularly the alarming deterioration in his vision while in custody – and the conditions of his imprisonment over the past two and a half years have caused us great concern,” the statement said.
He wrote, “As fellow cricketers who understand the value of fair play, honor and respect beyond measure, we believe that a person of Imran Khan’s stature should be treated with the same respect and basic human consideration as a former national leader and a global sporting icon.”
He expressed deep concern over the alleged treatment meted out to Imran Khan and the conditions of the jail. He has told how Imran is liked all over the world for his inspiring leadership and contribution to cricket. “Imran Khan’s contribution to the game is admired across the world. As captain, he led Pakistan to their historic 1992 Cricket World Cup win – a victory built on skill, toughness, leadership and sportsmanship that inspired generations across borders.
“Many of us competed against him, shared the field with him, or grew up idolizing his all-round ability, charisma and fighting spirit. He is one of the greatest all-rounders and captains the game has ever seen, commanding the respect of players, fans and administrators alike.”
He further added, “Aside from cricket, Imran Khan also served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, and led his country through a difficult period. Political perspective aside, he has the honor of being democratically elected to his country’s highest office.” Concluding the appeal, the former captains said that Pakistan officials have to maintain the principles of civility and justice.
“Cricket has long been a bridge between countries. Our shared history on the field reminds us that animosity ends when the stumps fall – and respect remains. Imran Khan demonstrated that spirit throughout his career. “We appeal to the authorities to respect this now by maintaining the principles of civility and justice.
This appeal has been made in the spirit of sportsmanship and common humanity, without having any impact on any legal action.” Imran Khan’s deteriorating health is being reported a lot, it is being said that he has lost some of his eyesight. Jailed in poor conditions since 2023, he has reportedly not been allowed to meet his family members by the Pakistan government and the all-powerful army.
