107 Tvk Mlas Will Resign If Dmk Or Aiadmk Is Invited To Form The Government

Amidst the ongoing political uncertainty after the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, actor Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kalagam (TVK) has given a big political signal. According to party sources, if MK Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kalagam (DMK) or Edappadi K Palaniswami-led AIADMK are invited to form the government, the TVK may consider seeking mass resignation from all its 107 MLAs.

Although Vijay himself has not made any public statement on this, but the growing resentment within the party and the ongoing tussle over power formation has made the issue serious. TVK leaders believe that despite emerging as the largest party in the elections, efforts are being made to keep them away from power.

Meanwhile, reports are coming that DMK has started backchannel talks with its old rival AIADMK, so that Vijay’s party can be prevented from forming the government. In the assembly elections held on April 23, DMK got 59 seats and AIADMK got 47 seats.

Whereas, TVK won a total of 108 seats. Vijay himself was victorious on two of these seats. Under constitutional rules, he will have to give up one seat, after which the party’s effective strength will be reduced to 107. With the support of five Congress MLAs, TVK’s tally reaches 112, but 118 seats are required for majority in the 234-member assembly.

According to sources, the TVK leadership is particularly upset that the DMK and AIADMK are allegedly trying to keep Vijay away from power as part of a joint strategy. Party leaders say that the public has certainly given a scattered mandate, but the largest party cannot be ignored. “The mandate is clearly divided, but the largest party cannot be kept out of the power formation process,” said a senior TVK leader.

TVK is constantly in touch with DMK’s allies with the aim of gathering the required numbers to form the government. The party has held talks with several parties, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Left and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), but no one has announced formal support so far.

This situation can create new instability in Tamil Nadu politics. If TVK actually takes the step of mass resignation, then a political crisis may arise in the state and by-elections may be seen once again in the state. At present, the eyes of all the parties are fixed on the next step of the Governor and possible alliance equations.
