US President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the ‘UFO Files’ public on Friday (May 8). These include photographs of alleged UFOs and many documents related to extraterrestrial life. The Pentagon has begun releasing a new collection of files related to unidentified flying objects (UFOs) or what the US government officially calls ‘Unidentified Paranormal Phenomena’ (UAPs). The government says that the public should be given freedom to draw their own conclusions on the basis of these documents.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’ on Friday, the Pentagon said that previous administrations often discouraged American citizens from discussing such incidents or cast doubt on their accounts, but President Donald Trump is insisting on maximum transparency. “Today the War Department released the first batch of new and never-before-publicized files related to unidentified paranormal phenomena (UAP) under the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE),” the US Department of Defense said.
According to the Department of Defense, it is an interagency effort that includes the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Department of Energy (DOE), the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and other units of the US intelligence apparatus.
The released documents also include a photo of an alleged crime scene overlaid with a graphic created by an FBI lab. This overlay cites eyewitness reports that a 130 to 195 feet long, oval bronze-colored metallic object suddenly appeared from a bright light in the sky and disappeared within moments. This entire collection is currently WAR.GOV/UFO Available on and additional files will also be released by the Department of Defense in a phased manner in future.
Trump had been hinting at this move since February. He wrote on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’ on February 19: “In view of the huge interest from the public, I have directed the Defense Minister and other relevant departments to initiate the process of identifying and declassifying government files related to extraterrestrials and extraterrestrial life, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and UFOs. These subjects are extremely complex, but extremely interesting and important.”
Earlier this year, the Trump administration appointed former President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Files related to the assassinations of Kennedy and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. were also made public, although they did not contain any major new revelations.
In recent years, particularly after several military personnel claimed to have encountered unidentified aerial objects, there has been increased pressure on the US government to release more information about UFO sightings.
However, experts have advised caution when interpreting these files. Analysts say that sometimes people unfamiliar with advanced military technology and air systems misinterpret UAP-related videos. In a previous Pentagon review, the US government had rejected claims that it had captured any alien spacecraft or found concrete evidence of alien life.
