Emotional meeting with 98 year old BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared an emotional moment with 98-year-old senior BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar during the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari. Makhanlal Sarkar was arrested along with Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee in 1953 during the movement to hoist the Indian tricolor in Kashmir.

Celebration ceremony with folk dance and cultural programs

Before the swearing-in ceremony, folk dance, devotional music and traditional cultural presentations created an atmosphere of enthusiasm at the venue. Chhau dance troupes and tribal artists entertained the supporters. In the background of the main stage, symbols depicting the cultural heritage of Bengal were displayed, prominent among which were the statues of Dakshineswar Kali Temple and Goddess Durga.

Packets of ‘Jhalmuri’ were also distributed to the supporters who attended the function. This popular Bengali dish came into limelight when Prime Minister Modi tasted it at a roadside stall in Jhargram during the election campaign.

BJP’s historic victory

BJP achieved a historic victory by winning 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly and ended the 15-year-old rule of Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress. The swearing-in of Suvendu Adhikari marks the formation of the BJP’s first government in West Bengal and is being considered as one of the party’s biggest electoral successes in eastern India.
