Pakistan’s double game? Iranian military aircraft allowed to use the airport
Pakistan is publicly presenting itself as a diplomatic mediator between Tehran and Washington to broker a ceasefire between the US and Iran. Meanwhile, during the recent conflict between Iran and America, information has come to light that Pakistan allowed Iranian military aircraft to park at one of its major airports. ‘India Today’ has published a report in this regard quoting ‘CBS News’.
US officials associated with the matter said that soon after US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire in early April, Iran transferred several aircraft along with military resources to the Pakistan Air Force’s Noor Khan Air Base near Rawalpindi. Among the aircraft deployed there was the Iranian Air Force’s RC-130 reconnaissance aircraft, a specialized version of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft used for surveillance.
The plane transfer appears to be aimed at protecting Iran’s remaining air and military assets from possible US strikes amid rising regional tensions, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity for national security reasons. Responding to the report, US Senator Lindsey Graham wrote on Twitter, “If this report is true, then Pakistan’s role as a mediator between Iran, the US and other parties should be completely re-evaluated.”
However, a senior Pakistani official rejected these allegations related to Noor Khan Airbase. He told CBS News that this airbase is located in a densely populated urban area, so any activity of this type cannot remain hidden.
According to some other reports, Iran has also sent civilian planes to neighboring Afghanistan. It was not immediately clear whether military aircraft were involved in those flights, according to two US officials. An Afghan Civil Aviation Department official told CBS News that a Mahan Air plane had landed in Kabul shortly before the conflict began and remained there even after Iranian airspace was closed. Later, due to fears of Kabul airport becoming a possible target due to Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan, the plane was diverted to Herat airport near the Iran border.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied reports of the presence of Iranian aircraft in Afghanistan, saying there was no need for Tehran to move its aircraft there.
Meanwhile, despite the announcement of ceasefire, tensions remain between Iran and America. According to Iranian state media, as part of the proposal to end the conflict, Iran has demanded compensation from the US for war damages, recognition of its sovereign rights over the Strait of Hormuz and lifting of US sanctions. President Trump publicly rejected Tehran’s counteroffer as “completely unacceptable,” although he did not specify which demands were rejected.
