A 61 Day Monsoon Fishing Ban Has Been Imposed In Maharashtra With Motorized Boats Prohibited From Venturing Into The Sea From June 1
The Maharashtra government has decided to impose an annual fishing ban of 61 days from June 1 to July 31, keeping in mind the conservation and breeding of marine animals during the monsoon season. During this period, there will be a complete ban on operation of mechanized and motorized fishing boats within the maritime limits of the state.
A statement issued by the Raigad district administration on Friday (May 22) said that the ban is being implemented under the Maharashtra Marine Fishing Regulation Act 1981 and its 2021 amendment.
Raigarh-Alibaug Assistant Fisheries Commissioner (Technical) Sanjay Patil has appealed to fishermen and boat owners to completely follow this 61-day ban. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against those violating the ban within 12 nautical miles of the coast.
According to officials, if the rules are broken, the boat, fishing equipment and fish caught can be confiscated. Additionally, maximum fine will also be imposed under the amended law.
The Fisheries Department has clarified that this ban will apply only to mechanized and motorized fishing boats. Traditional non-motorized small boats are exempted from this prohibition.
The government has directed all mechanized fishing boats present in the sea to return to fishing ports before June 1. These boats will not be allowed to go to sea again till July 31.
The officials also clarified that if any accident occurs with a motorized or mechanized boat while fishing illegally in the sea during the ban period, no compensation will be given by the government.
Apart from this, there will also be a ban on the movement of fishing vessels within the maritime limits of Maharashtra during the ban period. However, deep-sea fishing policies and guidelines of the Central Government will continue to be applicable to vessels operating beyond 12 nautical miles i.e. beyond the state territorial waters.
The Fisheries Department has appealed to all fishermen cooperative societies, boat owners and the fishermen community to follow this seasonal ban. Officials say that this step is necessary for the reproduction of marine creatures and conservation of fishery resources during monsoon.
