CPI(M) workers attack ED team after raids on locations linked to Pinarayi Vijayan
The Enforcement Directorate team was attacked in Kerala capital Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday (May 27). The attack was carried out to protest against the ED raiding premises linked to former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family. Protesting CPI(M) workers surrounded the vehicle of ED officers and attacked it.
The protesters broke the windows of the ED vehicle with bricks and iron rods. Women officers were also present in the vehicle. During the incident, protesters were raising slogans against the central agency and tension remained in the area for several hours.
The police and central security forces had to struggle a lot to control the situation. During the demonstration, some people have also been accused of throwing plastic bottles, helmets and stones at the security forces. Later, senior CPI(M) leaders intervened and pacified the workers and ended the violent protest.
The protest started when ED started raids at 10 places in Kerala. These include Pinarayi Vijayan’s current residence in Thiruvananthapuram, his ancestral home in Kannur and his son-in-law and former minister Muhammad Riaz’s home in Kozhikode.
The case that the investigating agency is probing is related to the infamous CMRL pay-off case. It is alleged that Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) paid crores of rupees to Vijayan’s daughter Veena Vijayan’s company Exalogic Solutions without providing any actual service.
According to the investigating agencies, around Rs 2.7 crore was given to Exalogic Solutions over several years. ED alleges that between 2018 and 2019, CMRL paid about Rs 1.72 crore, while no services were provided in return.
The case is being investigated by both the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) and ED. The agencies are trying to find out whether these payments were made for illegal gains or under political patronage. Just a day before the raid, the Kerala High Court had rejected CMRL’s plea seeking quashing of the ED action. After this the investigating agency intensified action across the state.
Pinarayi Vijayan has earlier also been rejecting the allegations against his daughter. He has been saying that all this is an attempt to tarnish his image and defame him politically.
Recently, after the victory of Congress led UDF in Kerala Assembly elections, Pinarayi Vijayan is out of power and now he is playing the role of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly. At such a time, the ED action and the violent protests that followed have further heated up the politics of the state.
