Stiffness in back and neck and upset stomach? ‘Saralmatsyasana’ will provide relief!

Only a few days are left for International Yoga Day 2026 (21 June). In such a situation, the Ministry of AYUSH of the Government of India is continuously appealing to the people to make yoga a part of their daily routine. The ministry has recommended the practice of Saral Matsyasana to address common problems such as persistent stiffness in the back and neck, stomach discomfort as well as digestive issues.

Daily practice of Saralmatsyasana or Easy Fish Pose can provide many health benefits. In today’s busy and stressful life, many people suffer from digestive problems like stomach gas, indigestion, constipation. Besides, complaints of difficulty in breathing, asthma or bronchitis have also become common. Many people also suffer from back pain, cervical spondylitis and constant stiffness in the neck.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Saral Matsyasana can prove to be very effective in dealing with these problems. Practicing Saral Matsyasana provides many benefits, not just one or two. This asana stretches the abdominal organs well, which strengthens the digestive system and reduces stomach related problems.

Opening the chest area increases breathing capacity and improves lung function. Stretching around the neck keeps the thyroid gland active. The muscles of the back and neck are relaxed, providing relief from chronic stiffness and pain.

An easy asana like Saral Matsyasana can be done even at home without any equipment. Regular exercise helps in healthy living and prevents many diseases.

To practice Saral Matsyasana, lie down on your back. Place both hands under the body with palms facing down. Along with this, keeping the elbows inwards, slowly lift the chest upwards and tilt the head backwards so that the upper part of the head touches the floor. Keep breathing normal during this time. Beginners can do this asana for 15-30 seconds. Increase the time gradually.

Yoga experts say that Yogasana not only gives physical health but also gives mental peace. This asana can be done in the morning on an empty stomach or in the evening. A person with serious back or neck injury, hernia or recent surgery should practice yoga only after consulting a yoga expert.
