U Min Aung told PM Modi, will not allow anti-India activities to happen on his land!

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of activities of Indian insurgent groups operating in the Southeast Asian country during talks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi on Monday. President Hlaing has expressed confidence that Myanmar’s land will not be allowed to be used against India’s security interests.

Regarding the conversation between PM Modi and President Hlaing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the President has reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to address these concerns and assured New Delhi that necessary steps will be taken to stop groups that pose a threat to India’s security.

Foreign Secretary Misri said, “There is a very urgent question of the activities of Indian insurgent groups along our borders in Myanmar and this is something that the Prime Minister again raised with the President and the President once again reiterated his confidence that Myanmar is sensitive to these concerns and will do everything necessary to ensure that they are acted upon and that they do not pose a threat to India’s security.”

Responding to questions on Myanmar’s internal stability, Misri highlighted the ongoing hostilities between the military and ethnic armed groups in the Southeast Asian country. Also stressed the efforts of Myanmar authorities to promote dialogue between different stakeholders so that a greater national consensus can be formed.

He said, “The other aspect of internal security is clearly the effort of the Myanmar government to bring all the ethnic armed organizations and groups on a single platform to take the peace process forward. It is really an attempt to see what kind of changes might be needed in the current governance structure or system of government in Myanmar to create something around which there is a broad national consensus and then move forward on that basis.”

Emphasizing the larger regional significance for peace and stability in Myanmar, Misri said developments in the country not only impact India’s security and connectivity interests, but also the solidarity of ASEAN, of which Myanmar is a key member.

“And this is an issue in which we have a clear interest. As I said, stability and peace in Myanmar is very important for India. It is not only for the security of our north-east region and the security of the people living along the 1643 km long border with Myanmar, but also for our interests like connectivity with South-East Asia.

“Security and stability in Myanmar is also important for ASEAN cohesion, as Myanmar is a large and important country within the ASEAN framework,” he said.
