Termites eat away cash worth Rs 1 crore!

A huge amount of cash, spoiled by termites, was found in two suitcases found in the union room during the pre-monsoon cleaning campaign at Surendranath College in central Kolkata, West Bengal on Tuesday (June 3). After this incident, police investigation has started and political controversy has also arisen.

The recovered cash mainly included Rs 100 and Rs 500 notes. All the notes were found in very bad condition. According to some claims, the total value of these notes could exceed Rs 1 crore. This has raised the question as to who had hidden such a huge amount of money in the college campus and why.

This campaign was conducted in the college after the city administration advised to conduct cleanliness drives in educational institutions before the monsoon. When workers went inside to clean the union room, they found two old suitcases stored in a cupboard.

A senior officer of Muchipara police station said, “When the suitcases were opened in the presence of the college administration, bundles of currency notes damaged by termites were found inside them. The notes were old and in very dilapidated condition.”

On receiving the information, a police team reached the college and took possession of some documents along with the suitcases. “At present, we are trying to find out the actual amount of money recovered and for how long the suitcases were kept there. We are also investigating who had access to that room and how the cash reached there,” the officer said.

The suitcases were opened in the presence of representatives from both day and evening sessions of the college. “Most of the notes are damaged and dirty. Their detailed inventory is being prepared and further action will be taken after verification,” the official said. Police are still trying to identify the source of the cash and the person or persons who kept it there.

This incident soon took a political color. Sajal Ghosh alleged corruption and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. He raised the question as to how such a huge amount could be kept in the college union room without anyone’s knowledge and demanded action against those responsible.

Bharatiya Janata Party has also held a student leader of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad responsible for this recovery.

Meanwhile, as part of the investigation, the officials have also opened another nearby union room and started searching all the lockers present there. Till the time of writing the news, the college administration had not issued any official statement regarding this recovery.
