MCD took strict action after Malviya Nagar fire, 94 buildings demolished and 114 properties sealed.

Following the massive fire incident at Flourish Stay Bed-and-Breakfast in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched a massive campaign against illegal construction and violation of building bye-laws. After the death of 21 people in this accident, the administration has intensified action in the entire city.

According to the MCD, 94 illegal properties have been demolished across Delhi since June 1, while 114 other buildings have been sealed. Apart from this, 158 notices have been issued so far in cases of violation of building rules or misuse of premises.

In its statement, the Municipal Corporation said that action is being taken in a coordinated manner across all areas of Delhi and strict action is being taken against properties violating building bye-laws. According to the corporation, this campaign is being run under the instructions of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

Action has also been taken in areas like Said-ul-Azaib, Hauz Rani, Khirki Extension, Savitri Nagar, Khanpur and Gautam Nagar of South Delhi. Three illegal constructions were demolished in these areas, while 18 properties have been sealed. A total of 41 enforcement actions have been taken since June 1 in these areas alone.

The fire that broke out at Flourish Stay Bed-and-Breakfast located in Hauz Rani area of Malviya Nagar has raised serious questions about illegal commercial activities and adherence to fire safety standards in the capital. After the incident, the administration has intensified the investigation of such establishments where there is a possibility of ignoring the safety rules.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has said that the government does not want to limit itself to punitive action only, but is also working rapidly on a permanent solution to this problem. Officials have been directed to study the possibilities of implementing third-party insurance system for guest houses, nursing homes, multi-storey buildings and other premises with high traffic.

It is necessary to further strengthen safety standards to ensure accountability and minimize the damage caused by such incidents in future. In this direction, many options are being considered at the administrative and policy level.
