Premji, accused in alleged poisonous capsule case in Mumbai Muharram procession, arrested!

New facts have come to light in the investigation of the conspiracy to distribute poisonous capsules to a large number of people during the Muharram procession in Mumbai. Accused Faiyaz Premji told the police that his motive was not to kill anyone but to create trouble during the Muharram procession.

Accused Faiyaz Premji told the police that his motive was not to kill anyone, but just to harass people. Before the incident, the accused had also practiced how many grams of pill would cause death. Therefore, the accused himself had prepared a packet of 1 gram, so that no one would die by consuming this poisonous pill.

Disturbing accounts of accused Faiyaz Nisar Hussain Premji (39) have emerged, including turmoil in family life, being ostracized by society and deteriorating mental health.

According to the police, Faiyaz Premji had stayed in a nearby low-cost hotel about two weeks before the Muharram procession, during his stay there he allegedly ordered 30,000 empty capsules and about 50 kg of zinc phosphide through an online platform. Zinc phosphide is a very poisonous chemical, which is commonly used to kill rats. The accused prepared these capsules in a hotel room for several days.

Mumbai Police investigation found that Premji’s marital and family life had disintegrated, leaving him emotionally disturbed and harboring resentment towards people from his own community.

The accused was angry against his religion and had distributed pamphlets opposing the practices and traditions of the Muslim religion a few years ago, following which religious leaders had allegedly ostracized his family from the community.

Socially isolated, Premji moved to Pune with his mother, elder brother Mohammed Abbas and his two younger sisters, Sakina and Rubina. It is said that he used to come to Mumbai sometimes and used to stay in the dormitory. Premji has a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and was married, but his wife left him four years ago.

Investigators believe that strained family relationships and feeling ignored by his brother and relatives led to his severe mental condition. Police said that he was also taking various types of medicines and pills.

In 2019, Premji moved to Iran with his mother, brother and sisters, where he started a fast food business and returned to Pune in 2025. According to the statement of the accused, his grandfather had also campaigned against the harsh practices of the Shia community, which might have had an impact on his outlook.

Police said that after returning to Pune in 2025, Premji was looking forward to Muharram events and had allegedly planned the attack much in advance. Learned how to make capsules online and reportedly made around 30,000 capsules at home by watching videos on YouTube.

According to the police, Premji believed that his own community was responsible for his personal troubles, such as his broken marriage and instability in the family. He reportedly decided to target people from a particular sect of Islam to take revenge.

Let us tell you that a Muharram procession was taking place in Byculla and Dongri areas of Mumbai, when Premji was seen distributing capsules kept in bags among the people participating in the procession. When the policemen deployed for security asked him about the capsules, he replied that they were painkillers, the purpose of which was to reduce the pain caused by injuries sustained during the procession.

However, soon two people, including Salman Syed, complained of uneasiness and vomiting. Police were told that both of them had consumed capsules distributed by Premji.

Police took Premji into custody from a hotel in Dongri. During the search, 14,900 capsules were found, which were filled with rat poison powder. Investigators also learned that he had purchased 50 kilograms of zinc phosphide and approximately 30,000 empty capsules.

Police said that Premji is still in custody and he is being interrogated strictly. Investigators are probing whether his mental condition and personal grievances played a role in the alleged conspiracy.

Investigators say that despite resentment towards his community, Premji does not appear to be radicalized or associated with any extremist organization. However, he had traveled extensively to Iraq and Iran, so officials are investigating all possible aspects. His mobile phone has been sent for forensic examination to ascertain his recent internet usage, conversations and online searches.
