India-Australia will return historical heritage, will also hand over remains of ancestors!

Cultural cooperation between India and Australia has gained new strength. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced significant progress in promoting mutual respect and preservation of cultural heritage between the two countries.

The statement issued by the Australian PMO mentions the MoU giving a new dimension to bilateral relations. Australia’s Prime Minister welcomed progress in returning the remains of an Australian First Nations ancestor, preserved at the Government Museum in Chennai, back to his traditional custodians. The Government of India has agreed to return these remains to Australia voluntarily and without any conditions.

The Australian government said, “The return of the ancestors of First Nations communities to their traditional communities holds immense honor and emotional significance for them. It is considered an important step towards historical justice and reconciliation. This decision by India is a symbol of the deep cultural ties and mutual trust between the two countries.”

Along with this, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also announced that many important artistic and historical relics related to India’s cultural heritage present in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales will also be voluntarily returned to India.

Australian Arts Minister Tony Burke said the return of ancestors and exchange of objects of cultural importance symbolizes the shared values ​​and mutual respect of India and Australia.

Meanwhile, Indigenous Australian Affairs Minister Melandiri McCarthy said the return of ancestors from overseas is an important step towards correcting the mistakes of the past and ensuring historical justice. He welcomed India’s cooperation in this process and described it as a positive achievement for the cultural relations between the two countries.

The Australian Government says the return of these cultural objects reflects its commitment to the best standards of ethical collecting and museum management. This step also strengthens the shared values ​​of both countries towards the preservation of cultural heritage and respect for historical heritage.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “The shared history of India and Australia connects the people of both countries and cultural cooperation is deepening these relations.” He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to return the remains of ancestors from the Australian First Nations community to their traditional custodians.
