The central government on Tuesday said that under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), fish production in the country has increased to 197.75 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, which was 141.64 lakh tonnes in 2023-24. In response to a question asked in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh said that the Government of India has implemented ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)’ for the overall development of fisheries and aquaculture sector in the country from the financial year 2020-21.
During the last six years of implementation period, the scheme has contributed significantly to increasing fish production in the country. He further informed that PMMSY promotes inclusive growth by providing higher financial assistance up to 60 per cent of the unit cost to women beneficiaries as part of beneficiary-centric activities.
Under this scheme, during the last six financial years (2020-21 to 2025-26), fisheries development projects worth Rs 4178.30 crore have been approved covering a total of 1,47,654 women beneficiaries in various states and union territories.
The Union Minister said that development of cold chain and marketing infrastructure facilities for fisheries and aquaculture is one of the main areas of various Central Schemes being implemented by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
The Department of Fisheries, Government of India has approved proposals worth Rs 2,797 crore by April 2026 under ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)’ and ‘Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) for the development of cold chain and marketing related facilities in the country.
Major activities sanctioned include 775 cold storage and ice plants in all states and union territories; 28,489 units of fish transport facilities (such as 13,718 motorcycles with ice boxes, 8,527 bicycles with ice boxes, 4,257 auto-rickshaws, 1,577 insulated trucks and 410 refrigerated trucks); 1,394 live fish selling units; 6,018 fish kiosks; 117 retail fish markets; and includes 24 wholesale fish markets.
