A red alert has been issued in Chhattisgarh for heavy to extremely heavy rains and thunderstorms due to the deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal. According to the Indian Meteorological Department and Meteorological Center Raipur, this seasonal system is moving towards the north-west direction, due to which monsoon will remain highly active in the state for the next 4 days.
Marking it as a ‘deep depression’, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning this morning to exercise extreme caution for the next 24 to 48 hours. This alert has been activated mainly keeping in mind the most severe form of monsoon in most parts of the state today (July 27) and tomorrow (July 28). This has been done due to the transformation of the low pressure area over the Bay of North-West Bengal and adjacent northern Odisha-West Bengal coast into a strong depression and the monsoon trough formed at the sea level spreading to the Bay of North-West Bengal via Western Rajasthan, Orai, Sidhi, Ranchi.
Meteorologist BR Chindhalore said that the depression formed in the Bay of Bengal is continuously pulling moisture towards Chhattisgarh. Due to this, sufficient amount of water vapor is reaching over Chhattisgarh. At the same time, due to the monsoon trough and shear zone formed in the upper air, clouds are forming rapidly. This is the reason why rain activities will remain intense for the next few days.
The Meteorological Department has warned of torrential rain with thunderstorms in most parts of Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg divisions. There is every possibility of strong winds at a speed of 30 to 40 km/hour and lightning in many parts of the state. Moderate to heavy rains will continue in districts like Balod Bazar, Dhamtari, Gariaband, Janjgir-Champa, Mahasamund and Raigarh. In the last 24 hours, maximum rainfall of 15 cm has been recorded in Basna of Mahasamund.
According to the local forecast issued for the capital Raipur city, the sky is expected to be generally cloudy and there is a possibility of rain and thundershowers. During this period, the maximum temperature of the city is expected to be recorded around 29 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be around 25 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has appealed to the citizens to stay in safe places during bad weather.
