Government’s big action against showing fake news and wrong content, 15 OTT platforms banned

OTT Platforms Ban: Online content is increasing rapidly in India, but with it the problem of wrong and objectionable content is also coming to the fore. For this reason, the government and parliamentary committees are now increasing strictness on OTT platforms. According to recent reports, about 10 to 15 OTT platforms are under investigation for violating rules.

The parliamentary committee said that many platforms have been accused of showing illegal and objectionable content. According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, first 25 platforms were blocked, after which action was also taken against 18 others. At present, investigation of 10-15 platforms is going on and if necessary, these can also be blocked. Its objective is to ensure safe and clean content on the Internet.

Accused of showing objectionable material

In February, the government had blocked some OTT platforms like MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Jugnu. They were accused of showing obscene and objectionable material, which violates the IT Rules 2021. Earlier in 2025 also, action was taken against more than 25 apps, which included some popular platforms.

The committee also said in its report that there are some shortcomings in the existing rules related to OTT and online media. Therefore, there is a need for a strong and clear regulation system, so that bad content can be effectively controlled. The government wants digital platforms to be monitored more strictly.

Government strict on fake news

Concern has also been expressed about fake news. The Fact Check Unit of Press Information Bureau is working in this direction and has so far blocked about 1400 URLs. The report suggests that AI tools should be used more to prevent fake content and the number of multilingual experts should be increased for this work.

supreme Court refuses to intervene

This matter has also taken legal form. The Supreme Court said to hear this issue on March 10, 2026. This matter is related to the decision of Bombay High Court, in which the PIB Fact Check Unit was cancelled. However, the Supreme Court refused to stay this decision, which has made the matter more important.

The report also notes that fake news and misleading audio-video clips often spread rapidly during major events—such as elections, protests or other significant events. In such a situation, the government and related agencies need to be more alert, so that correct and reliable information can reach the people.
