16-year-old tourist dies in China after bungee swing safety rope fails
A 16-year-old tourist from China died after falling from a cliff swing in Sichuan Province following a reported safety failure.
Authorities in Sichuan confirmed her death on May 5.
According to Chinese media, the accident took place on May 3 at an adventure park near Huaying, Sichuan as the country enjoyed a five-day Golden Week holiday break starting from May 1.
The girl was reportedly launched from the platform despite her alerting the staff that the safety rope was not securely fastened, Mothership reported.
Videos circulating online showed the girl attached to the swing via a safety harness and a rope.
The girl was then hoisted toward the edge of the platform by a mechanical cable.
As she neared the edge, she could be heard crying out and shouting that the rope was not properly fastened.
She was later seen falling into the canyon and later died on the way to hospital, Hong Kong’s Standard reported.
A staff member of the bungee swing operator shared that the company is in touch with the family of the deceased, according to Jimu News.
The nature park had also temporarily suspended operations until May 10.
