18 carat gold… designed in Italy, this is the history of FIFA World Cup trophy
The FIFA World Cup trophy has been designed by an Italian sculptor. In this spiral shape, he has tried to depict three emotions related to sports, which include the struggle of the players, the joy of the fans and the moments of victory. In the current World Cup being held in America, this prestigious trophy will be in the name of either Argentina or Spain on Sunday.
Brazil won its third World Cup in 1970, gaining permanent rights to the original trophy. In such a situation, FIFA, the supreme body of world football, started an open competition for a new design. After this, Silvio Gazzaniga designed the trophy in his studio located in the Brera area of Milan.
This design has now become a hit in the eyes of football lovers around the world. In this, two human figures are holding the earth. Gazzaniga died in 2016. Giorgio Gazzaniga, the sculptor’s son, said, ‘When he started designing the cup he was making several drawings. Only after this did he prepare the final design.

Original World Cup trophy stolen twice
The trophy prepared for the first World Cup (1930) had a picture of the Greek goddess Nike. It was known as the Jules Rimet Trophy, after the tournament’s founder. Brazil gained permanent rights to the original trophy after becoming the first country to win three World Cups under previously agreed upon rules. After this FIFA prepared a new trophy.
The Jules Rimet trophy was also stolen twice. It was first displayed publicly in 1966 after England became champions for the first time and was stolen. According to FIFA, it was discovered by a dog named Pickles under a bush in South London. It was stolen again from the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Federation in 1983, after Brazil had permanent rights to the trophy. This trophy has not been recovered till date and is believed to have been melted down.

The trophy is made of 18 carat gold
The trophy, which the captain of the winning team receives after the World Cup final, is 36 centimeters (14 in) high and made of 18 karat gold. It rests on a base with two green rings. These rings symbolize playgrounds. The original trophy is returned to FIFA after the tournament. FIFA houses it at its Swiss headquarters. The winning team gets a gold-plated replica to take home. FIFA has now changed the rules, according to which the three-time winners are no longer entitled to keep the original trophy.
