2 Indian Army soldiers created history, won the first gold medal in the World Rowing Cup
New Delhi. Indian Army’s two soldiers Lakshya and Ujjwal Kumar Singh have created history in the 2026 World Rowing Cup III held in Lucerne, Switzerland, winning the first gold medal for the country in this event. In the lightweight men’s double sculls final, the Indian pair of Lakshya and Ujjwal Kumar Singh performed brilliantly and finished on the first position with a timing of 6 minutes 26.09 seconds. They faced tough competition from the pairs of Hong Kong and Netherlands but managed to keep them behind.
Lakshya and Ujjwal Kumar Singh have now become the first Indian pair to win a gold medal for the country for the first time in the World Rowing Cup series. While both of them completed their race in 6:26.09, Hong Kong’s San Tung Lam and Tik Lun Chan pair came second, who completed the race in a time of 6:27.14. In this event, the Dutch pair of Eric van Eijk van Heslinga and Frederik Ploeg stood third in this event, who completed the race in a time of 6:27.36.
Both Lakshya and Ujjwal Kumar Singh are soldiers in the Indian Army and are part of the Indian contingent present in Lucerne. Of the 18-member team taking part in the regatta, 17 athletes are from the Indian Army and one from the Indian Navy. This regatta took place on Lucerne’s famous Rotsee Lake. In which it is considered one of the best rowing venues in the world, because the waters here are calm and it has an Olympic-standard 2000 meter long six-lane course.
