20 crore grand set, 30 kg lehenga! 24 years ago, the film ‘Ya’ changed the picture of Bollywood; Even today the magic remains
Whenever the topic of grand films comes up in Indian cinema, the name of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Devdas’ is inevitably mentioned. Released on 12 July 2002, the film set new standards not only at the box office, but also in terms of art design, sets, costumes and music. On the completion of 24 years of release, some interesting facts behind the film are back in the news.
At that time, ‘Devdas’, made on a budget of Rs 50 crore, was considered the most expensive film in India. Interestingly, nearly Rs 20 crore was spent on the lavish sets erected for the film. The royal sets created by art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai are still remembered by cinemagoers.
Equal effort was put into the costumes of the actors in the film. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s sarees for the role of ‘Paro’ were specially ordered from Kolkata. The famous lehenga worn by Madhuri Dixit for the role of ‘Chandramukhi’ weighed 30 kg. His weight was later increased to 16 kg due to difficulty in dancing.

Special attention was also paid to lighting and cinematography to make every frame of the film look like a picture. A large number of generators were used to film some scenes. There were also fire accidents on the sets during the shoot, which unfortunately resulted in the death of some crew members.
