Post on Nepal situation

Home Ministry spokesperson Tiwari said efforts are on to clear the blocked highways to restore traffic. The Bagmati, Kathmandu's main river, was flowing above danger levels after continuous rain lashed large parts of eastern and central Nepal on Friday and Saturday, a news release from the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) said. The exceptionally intense rains were caused by a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and a higher than normal monsoon trough to the north, reports said on Saturday.

Monsoon trough is a low pressure area extending from lower parts of Pakistan to the Bay of Bengal. Due to this, there may be abnormal rainfall in the east-west part of the Himalayan ranges and the north-south part of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills. Scientists say climate change is causing changes in the amount and timing of rainfall across Asia and the environment is a major cause of increased flood impacts.
