2000 Rupee Note: Big update regarding 2000 rupee notes, RBI gave this information

2000 Rupee Note: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced to withdraw Rs 2000 note from circulation on 19 May 2023. At that time the total value of these notes in the market was about Rs 3.56 lakh crore.

According to the latest RBI data, by February 28, 2026, this amount has reduced to Rs 5,551 crore. That means approximately 98.44% of Rs 2000 notes have returned to the banking system.

Facility to exchange money in normal banks closed

The facility to exchange or deposit Rs 2000 notes by visiting normal bank branches was stopped on 7 October 2023.

However this note is still legal tender. If you have a Rs 2000 note even in 2026, there is no need to panic, but now it can be deposited or exchanged only directly through RBI.

Change notes like this by going to RBI office

You can deposit or exchange notes by directly visiting 19 issue offices of RBI. A maximum of Rs 20,000 notes can be exchanged at a time. Carry along with you Aadhar card, PAN card and bank passbook or canceled cheque. Generally working hours are from 10 am to 2:30 pm.

You can also deposit through post

If you cannot visit the RBI office, you can also send the note through post:

  1. Download the application form for crediting ₹2000 note from the official website of RBI.

  2. Fill the form and attach self-attested copies of bank passbook, PAN and Aadhar along with it.

  3. Keep the notes in a secure envelope and send them to the nearest RBI office through insured speed post.

  4. The amount will be deposited directly into your bank account.

Where are the 19 issue offices of RBI?

These offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
