2026 Tata Punch EV 40kWh Battery With Longer Range: Everything You Need To Know

The new 40kWh battery pack is the most significant mechanical highlight of the 2026 Tata Punch.EV. Here is everything you need to know about its technology, performance, range, and availability:

Battery Technology and Design

Upgraded Chemistry: While it retains an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) composition, the new battery switches from cylindrical to higher-density prismatic cells. Because prismatic cells are rectangular, they can be packed much closer together, allowing Tata to fit a larger capacity battery into the same space.

Smarter and More Efficient: Tata’s engineering team optimized the battery management and thermal systems, making the battery denser, thermally smarter, and more resilient to extreme climates.

6-in-1 e-Drive Module: The electric motor and other key components (like the inverter, reduction gear, and onboard charger) are now integrated into a single “6-in-1” drive unit. This module is 28% lighter, 50% smaller, and 6% more efficient than the previous setup.

Power and Torque: The electric motor paired with the 40kWh battery delivers a peak output of 128hp to 129hp and 154Nm of torque.

Acceleration: This powertrain allows the electric SUV to sprint from 0-100 kph in under 9 seconds (with real-world tests clocking it around 9.1 seconds).

Range and Efficiency

For the 40kWh battery pack, the real-world range is expected to be well over 300 kilometers, with specific figures depending on the rating system:

Dad Act

Tata’s Real-World Estimate (C75 Rating): Tata Motors states that under its C75 testing cycle—which is designed to reflect the actual near-real-world driving range that 75% of owners can expect to achieve—the 40kWh battery will deliver around 335 km to 355 km per charge.

Certified Claimed Range: On paper, the ARAI or MIDC certified range for the 40kWh battery is considerably higher, officially rated between 464 km and 468 km.

Everyday Driving: Automotive experts note that the 40kWh battery comfortably offers a real-world range of “over 300 km,” meaning it is more than sufficient for long daily commutes without any range anxiety

How to get even higher range from the battery?

By using hypermiling techniques.

According to a Tata promo video, an experienced automotive journalist recently hypermiled the Tata Punch.EV facelift on a highway trip from Jaipur to Himmatnagar and managed to extract nearly 600 kilometers of range on a single charge. This figure far exceeds standard real-world expectations and even rivals the laboratory-tested ARAI certification numbers.

Hypermiling involves extreme, hyper-efficient driving habits that may not be practical for everyday commutes. But learning about hypermiling techniques might help in everyday driving range improvement. Hypermiling works well on smooth highways, steady driving at the right speed, avoiding traffic and being very patient with slow speeds!

You can also use the vehicle’s built-in features to maximize your range:

Eco Drive Mode: Selecting “Eco” mode deliberately softens the car’s acceleration and overall performance to preserve battery power and extend your driving range.

Regenerative Braking: The car is equipped with four levels of regenerative braking, which can be adjusted using paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. Utilizing higher levels of regeneration (like Level 3) allows the electric motor to recover energy while coasting or decelerating, which feeds power back into the battery and improves overall efficiency

Charging Capabilities

Fast Charging: The 40kWh battery supports DC fast charging up to 65kW. A compatible fast charger can take the battery from 10% or 20% to 80% in roughly 26 to 30 minutes.

Quick Top-up: If you are in a rush, a 15-minute charge on a fast charger can add 135 km of driving range.

Home Charging: A 3.3kW AC portable charger is included as standard, while buyers have the option to install a faster 7.2kW AC wall box charger for an additional cost.

Warranty and Availability

Lifetime Warranty: As discussed earlier, Tata is offering an industry-first lifetime battery warranty (unlimited kilometers) exclusively on this 40kWh pack for the first owner.

Trim Availability: The 40kWh battery is available on the Smart+, Adventure, Empowered, and Empowered+ S trims, but is noticeably missing from the entry-level base Smart variant, which only gets the smaller 30kWh battery

Which variants offer the 40kWh battery, and their price details

The larger 40kWh battery pack is available on all trims of the 2026 Tata Punch.EV except for the entry-level Smart trim.

Here are the specific variants that offer the 40kWh battery along with their standard ex-showroom prices:

Smart+: Rs 10.89 lakh

Adventure: Rs 11.59 lakh

Empowered: Rs 12.29 lakh

Empowered+ S (or Empowered Plus): Rs 12.59 lakh

It is worth noting that the Adventure, Empowered, and Empowered+ S trims are exclusively available with the larger 40kWh battery, while the Smart+ trim is the only one that gives buyers the option to choose between the 30kWh and 40kWh pack.

(Note: These are the standard purchase prices including the battery. Tata has not yet revealed the specific Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) subscription pricing for these 40kWh variants
