There is a shadow of mourning in England cricket, the legend who scored 20 thousand runs dies

England cricket is currently in mourning as their former opener and cricket administrator Hugh Morris has passed away at the age of 62 after a long battle with cancer. He is always remembered in the cricket world as an excellent player and visionary administrator. His contribution was not only on the field, but he also played a big role in strengthening England and Wales cricket.

Born in Cardiff in 1963, Hugh Morris has been associated with Welsh and Glamorgan cricket since childhood. In the year 2021, he was diagnosed with intestinal cancer, which later spread to the liver. Despite illness, he remained associated with cricket for a long time and continued fulfilling his responsibilities. In September 2023, he resigned as chief executive of Glamorgan to devote time to treatment and his family.

Morris made his debut in first-class cricket for Glamorgan at the age of just 17. At that time he was studying at Blundell School, Devon and had already made a name for himself with his batting. He played cricket for Glamorgan for 17 seasons and scored nearly 20,000 first-class runs at an average of over 40. He has 52 first-class centuries to his name, which is a major record for the club.

He captained Glamorgan twice and led the team to the Sunday League title in 1993, the club’s first major trophy in 24 years. In 1997, Glamorgan won the County Championship, in which Morris played a key role. In the same season he scored a century in the deciding match and later retired from cricket. At international level, Morris played three Test matches for England in 1991. Apart from this, he also captained the England A and Young England teams and led the team on foreign tours.

After retirement, he chose the path of cricket administration. He was associated with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for 16 years and became its Chief Executive in 2007. During his tenure, England won three consecutive Ashes series and also won the 2010 T20 World Cup. He resigned from this post in 2013. He later returned as CEO of Glamorgan and led the club out of financial crisis and back into a strong position. In recognition of his contribution to the development of Welsh cricket, he was awarded an MBE in 2022 and inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 2024. In such a situation, the departure of Hugh Morris is a big loss for the cricket world.
