23 Lakh Women Get Jobs Under Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in UP
Uttar Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone in the current fiscal year under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), with over 23 lakh women gaining employment, marking a major boost to rural livelihoods and women’s economic empowerment. The scheme, a cornerstone of India’s rural job guarantee framework, has not only expanded women’s participation but also strengthened trust through timely and transparent wage payments directly to workers’ bank accounts, with more than ₹111 crore credited so far.
Around 32,000 women supervisors have been employedreinforcing leadership opportunities for rural women and improving local implementation of the programme.
MGNREGA Boosts Inclusive Growth as UP Tops Employment Generation
The state’s broader MGNREGA performance highlights a strong outreach, with more than 48 lakh families receiving employment this year, reflecting the government’s emphasis on inclusive growth and reducing rural distress. A significant portion of these beneficiaries belong to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, underscoring efforts toward equitable development. Additionally, 97 percent of workers received their wages on time, further strengthening confidence in the scheme’s delivery systems.
Uttar Pradesh continues to lead the country in employment generation under MGNREGA, creating the highest number of person-days and expanding rural income opportunities across villages. The scheme also supports infrastructure development, water conservation works, and ecological initiatives such as plantation drives, all of which contribute to sustainable growth.
