This horrific accident happened at the Birch by Romeo Lane club located in Arpora village of Goa when there was a blast in the kitchen area. Within a few seconds, the fire engulfed the entire kitchen and within no time the smoke filled the basement. The basement of the club was full of employees at that time. Most of the people were working there. As soon as the fire broke out, there was chaos. According to eyewitnesses, instead of running outside, people ran towards the basement, where a blanket of smoke had already spread.

Of those killed in the accident, 20 people died of suffocation, while the bodies of three people were found badly burnt. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described the incident as a ‘very painful day’ for the state and ordered an investigation into the matter. According to preliminary information, among the dead were 4 tourists and 14 staff members and 7 have not been identified yet, due to which the seriousness of this accident and the number of employees trapped inside can be estimated.
