27000 soldiers deployed, curfew in many districts, internet shut down; What is happening in Manipur?

-Violence has again flared up in Manipur, Kuki and Meitei communities have come out on the streets at many places.

Imphal. Amit Shah on Manipur Violence: Manipur is once again burning in the fire of violence. After an encounter between militants and security forces in Jiribam in the state, militants abducted and brutally killed 6 people. Due to this, local people are protesting fiercely in the area. The houses of several ministers were attacked and the protesters also tried to attack the Chief Minister's house.

Angry Meitei community members have taken to the streets after six members of a family were brutally murdered by Kuki militants. They are continuously protesting violently. On the other hand, the Kuki community is calling the November 11 encounter fake.

What is the situation now?

The current situation in Manipur is once again the same as before. Many parts of the state are in the grip of violence. On one hand, people of the Kuki community are resorting to violence for their demands, while on the other hand, the Meiti community has taken to the streets demanding strict action in the case of murder of six members of the same family. Given the current situation, all schools in Manipur have been closed on November 19 and internet services are already closed.

What is the new challenge?

People of Kuki community are demanding justice for those killed in the violence (Amit Shah on Manipur Violence). Hundreds of people also protested in Churachandpur on Friday. Kuki organizations have also claimed that those killed were not militants but village volunteers. Meanwhile, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum, the main organization representing the Kuki community, has said that the last rites of the 10 Kuki youth killed in the firing by the Central Police Force will not be performed until the post-mortem report comes. On the other hand, the Meitei community has also taken to the streets and threatened a major agitation if strict action is not taken against the Kuki militants who kidnapped and later murdered 6 members of the same family.

What did the Home Minister say?

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday (November 18, 2024) reviewed the security situation in Manipur and the deployment of security forces there for the second consecutive day. Shah directed top officials to focus on restoring peace and order in the communal violence-hit state as soon as possible.

The Central Government has decided to send 50 more CAPF companies to Manipur to control the situation. Thus now a total of 268 companies of CAPF are going to be deployed in the state. That means the number of soldiers deployed in violence-affected areas of the state will increase to 26,800. Among these 50 companies, the largest number will be from CRPF companies, while the remaining companies will be from BSF and other security forces.

What are the efforts of the government?

The state and central governments are making separate efforts to curb violence in Manipur. The state government has decided to shut down internet for the next two days in seven violence-affected districts. The Central Government has decided to send 50 additional companies of CAPF here. People are also being appealed for peace.
