29th or 30th July, when does Sawan start? Know the fast, story and rules

In Hindu religion, the month of Saavan is considered a symbol of religious faith. In this month all the devotees worship Lord Shiva and Mother Lakshmi. According to religious belief, in this holy month Lord Shiva resides in the earth and fulfills every wish of his devotees. For this reason, many devotees offer water to Shivling every day in the month of Sawan and also observe fast on every Monday. Many devotees also perform Rudrabhishek in this month, due to which Lord Shiva is pleased and fulfills all their wishes.

 

According to religious belief, this month devotees should avoid Tamasic food like onion, garlic, meat and alcohol. Also, people should try to keep fast on every Monday in the month of Sawan. Now the question arises that when is the month of Sawan starting? Also what rules should people follow this month.

According to the Hindu calendar, the month of Sawan is starting from 29 July 2026. This month will end on 28 August 2026. During this period, there will be four Mondays when devotees will observe fast. However, many devotees also observe fruit fast throughout the month. In this month, many devotees bring Ganga water or water of holy rivers and offer it in the Shiva temple of their area, which gives them blessings of happiness, prosperity and fulfillment of wishes. This is the date of the fourth Monday of the month of Sawan.

3 August 2026 – first monday
10 August 2026 –second monday
17 August 2026 – 3rd monday
24 August 2026 –fourth monday

 

According to religious belief, devotees should keep fast on these four Mondays, so that they get the blessings of Lord Shiva. Now the question arises that what rules should the devotees keep in mind while observing the fast.

What to do while fasting?

 

1. Devotees who observe fast in the month of Sawan should wake up in the morning and take bath. While worshiping, take a pledge to fast in front of the idol of Lord Shiva. During the puja, light a ghee lamp, offer Belpatra, Bhang and Dhatura.

2. Devotees should tell the type of fast as per their resolution. If you are going to observe Nirjala fast, then take a pledge of Nirjala fast.
3.Offer water on Shivling every day in the month of Sawan.
4.Chant the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivay’ every day this month.
5. Donate food to poor and needy people.
