3 districts, 43 seats, know the secret of Mamata Banerjee’s ‘SIR movement’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hold rallies in Malda and Murshidabad against the Special Intensive Revision of the Election Commission. She will also hold a public meeting against the Election Commission in Cooch Behar. Trinamool Congress is planning to corner the Central Government and the Election Commission on SIR. Mamta Banerjee has already vocally opposed the Election Commission. He says that due to the collusion of the government and the Election Commission, the votes of minorities and poor sections are being cut in West Bengal.

Mamta Banerjee is now going to protest on the ground against SIR for the second time. Earlier last week, he had held a rally in Bangaon, a refugee-dominated Matua-dominated area. During the rally, he had alleged that the SIR campaign was being misused to intimidate families living in border areas.

Why is Trinamool Congress protesting?

Trinamool has started this campaign in response to BJP’s ‘eliminate infiltrators’ campaign. Trinamool Congress leaders will hold rallies in Malda on December 3 and Murshidabad on December 4. Will organize rallies in Cooch Behar on 9th December.

Why will Mamata Banerjee go only to Malda, Murshidabad and Cooch Behar?

All three districts are minority dominated districts. A large part of the migrant and displaced population lives here. Due to special intensive revision, a section of people in these districts have to face more difficulties. There have been reports of suicides of many booth level officers (BLOs) from these districts of West Bengal. Now Mamata Banerjee is trying to corner them by making them an issue.

Why are these districts beneficial for Mamata from political point of view?

Why will Mamata Banerjee go to Malda?

There are 2 scheduled caste reserved seats in Malda district of West Bengal. Here this population is in a decisive position. There is also a reserved seat for a Scheduled Tribe. There are total 12 assembly seats. There are 2 Lok Sabha seats. 4 seats are with BJP, one seat is with Congress and 7 seats are with TMC. Out of 12 MLAs, 4 are Muslim MLAs. Khagen Murmu of BJP is the MP from Malda North, while Isha Khan Chaudhary of Congress is the MP from Malda South.

Census data conducted in the year 2011 shows that the total population of Malda is about 3,988,845. Of these, 51 percent of the population is Muslim. The population of Hindus is 47.99 percent. Mamata Banerjee has been successful in solving the minority equation in West Bengal. In such a situation, BJP is linking his rally with minority appeasement. Mamta is talking about tampering in minority votes only, hence she is trying her best to woo the voters here.

Why will Mamata Banerjee go to Murshidabad?

Murshidabad is also a minority dominated district. Hindus are a minority here, their population is 33.21 percent. Muslim population is 66.27 percent. Malda has 22 assembly and 3 Lok Sabha seats. 14 out of 22 MLAs come from the minority community. Here TMC has won 20 seats. All three MPs from Murshidabad are from Trinamool Congress. Violence broke out in North Murshidabad in April 2025. Trinamool Congress is in control of 7 out of 8 municipalities and all 26 panchayat committees of Murshidabad. The minorities here are the core voters of Mamata Banerjee, she is once again trying to woo them on the pretext of SIR.

What is the strategy to go to Cooch Behar?

According to the 2011 census, the Hindu population in Cooch Behar is about 74.06 percent, while the Muslim population is 25.54 percent. Muslims are in a decisive position. There are 3 Lok Sabha seats in Cooch Behar. BJP is in control of 2 Lok Sabha seats in Cooch Behar, while TMC is in control of one seat. There are 9 assembly seats here. TMC has only two seats, while BJP has 7 seats. Mamata Banerjee is coming here to strengthen her party and woo the minority voters. Mamta Banerjee is going to Cooch Behar on 9 December. their rally

How has BJP responded?

BJP says that Mamata Banerjee is scared of SIR, she is agitating on the ground to save illegal Bangladeshis. BJP is holding a rally to drive out illegal infiltrators. Just before the 2026 assembly elections, both the parties are busy making their respective positions on SIR.
