The estimated budget of this film, released in November 2018, was said to be Rs 300 crore. Trade analysts said that for the film to become a superhit, it would have to earn Rs 500 crore in India alone. This film earned 52 crores on the opening day.

According to media reports, Thugs of Hindostan earned only Rs 6 crore on the 6th day of its release and on the second Monday its earning did not even reach Rs 1 crore.

According to reports, Thugs of Hindostan performed poorly and collected only Rs 151 crore in India, while it could earn Rs 322 crore worldwide. Mid-Day reported that the shows of the film were going empty due to which the theater owners had demanded money back from YRF.

At that time, Aamir Khan's Thugs of Hindostan was described as one of the biggest disappointments in the history of Indian cinema. According to media reports, Aamir Khan took full responsibility for the film's flop and apologized to his fans.
