3 unlucky players missing from India’s ODI squad for England series
Back in the fold, Virat Kohli makes his return following the Afghanistan series held on home soil. Excitement rose when India named its ODI team for the trip to England. Facing tough weather and pitches there, the squad gets a boost with Jasprit Bumrah turning up again. Not far behind, Axar Patel rejoins, adding depth just before the hard road begins across the border.
Yet once more, each team reveal leaves some better off, others worse.
Still sidelined, Hardik Pandya recovers from a thigh muscle issue, likely back only when India tours Sri Lanka. Making way now, debutants Prince Yadav and Harsh Dubey miss out – selection leans towards seasoned hands instead.
Three players who missed out on the India ODI squad:
1. Ravindra Jadeja
It’s Jadeja’s absence that keeps coming up again and again. Out on the pitch, time after time, Jadeja finds a way when things get tight. For years now, he’s stood tall as someone India can count on. With the bat, sure – but just as much when bowling or chasing down runs in the deep.
Now comes the chance to see how unproven names handle pressure, though gaps may show fast. Still, veterans such as Jadeja remain in reach if things tilt too far. Yet banking only on fresh faces carries weight of its own.
Jadeja’s most recent one-day game came against New Zealand early in 2026. From the start of 2025 onwards, runs have come at an average of 53 while claiming twelve wickets – far from fading form. What really stands out is how Jadeja can shift a match when it matters most – something numbers rarely show.
Out of sight, out of form – that’s how it often goes. Staying distant from regular play brings up tough doubts. Sharpness in games does not appear fast, no matter the skill level. Even someone like Jadeja needs steady runs to stay locked in. Missing time means missing timing.
If things keep moving like this, India might lose a top all-rounder without fanfare in ODIs – an exit too quiet for someone who poured everything into the game. The rhythm we’ve seen lately could soon erase years of effort on the field. Few notice how close he is to vanishing from the format entirely. A slow fade instead of a salute feels wrong somehow. What once looked solid now seems fragile under steady neglect. His contributions deserve more than silence at the end.
2. Mohammed Siraj
Bowling for India, Mohammed Siraj has led the fast men through season after tough season. Now it’s his turn to carry the load once Bumrah and Shami step away. Each time he answered the call, Siraj wore the pressure like an old jersey – faded but still fitting. Yet staying steady never leaves you unmarked.
The Hyderabad fast bowler keeps turning up, delivering ball after ball, especially in Test matches where he’s taken on more than before. Because Bumrah battles injuries often now and Shami rarely shows up in one-day games, Siraj simply steps in, carrying the load without fuss.
Workload handling seems to take precedence, judging by the selectors’ current approach.
Ajit Agarkar, leading the selection panel, once mentioned Siraj wouldn’t play every format nonstop. Staying sharp for bigger games down the road comes first. Because of that choice, he missed the ODI series against England. The team lost a reliable fast bowler, yet the plan remains unchanged.

3. Yashasvi Jaiswal
Missing out hits harder when it’s someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal who isn’t there. Nowhere near done yet, he’s built a strong name in Tests for India. Still, his one-day game keeps shifting without finding balance. Without room at the top – Rohit and Gill hold those spots tightly – chances rarely come his way.
When Kohli sat out against Afghanistan, Jaiswal stepped in. With Gill moving up to three, the new guy didn’t hold back. That knockout hundred in Chennai during the third ODI, pure fire – bold shots flying, yet calm like he’d been there forever.
This time too, Jaiswal misses selection. Again, he stands outside the team.
Maybe it’s less about flaws in Jaiswal’s play, more about sticking to a familiar lineup. Tough, though, when you’ve just proven your worth, you get left out right away.
Picking a team always brings tough choices. With big names such as Kohli, Bumrah, and Axar Patel coming back, space shrinks for some players – on top of that, fitness issues and careful player usage add more layers.
Missing out on Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja might leave the England ODI series tasting flat. Though their absence shapes things differently, the chance slips through fingers already gripping past moments. Each player brings weight that echoes beyond numbers. Without them, the rhythm shifts – quieter, less sharp. What could have sparked now lingers as a quiet what-if. Moments like these rarely knock twice.
